Ice dams are solid ridges of ice that form at the edge of a roof, forcing melting snow to back up “uphill” under the shingles. Standard underlayment cannot stop this hydrostatic pressure.   • The Melt: This heat causes the snow resting on the upper field of the roof to melt into liquid water, which runs down the slope.
  • The Refreeze: Because the eaves (the overhangs of the roof) extend past the exterior walls, they are not warmed by the attic. The water hits this freezing cold eave and instantly turns into a solid ridge of ice.
  • Hydrostatic Backup: As more snow melts, the liquid water becomes trapped behind this solid ice wall. It pools up and eventually pushes backward, climbing underneath the overlapping shingles and penetrating the nail holes.

The Solution: Rubberized Asphalt Membranes

Standard synthetic underlayment or felt paper is stapled or nailed to the deck. If water gets under the shingles and sits on top of this paper, it will eventually seep through the thousands of staple/nail holes.

Ice and Water Shield is entirely different. It is a thick, modified bitumen (rubberized asphalt) roll that features a highly aggressive peel-and-stick adhesive backing. When applied, it bonds directly to the wood decking. More importantly, when the roofer drives a nail through it to install a shingle, the rubberized asphalt instantly acts like a gasket, self-sealing around the shank of the nail. This creates a completely impenetrable barrier against standing water.

The 24-Inch Legal Code Mandate

In municipalities where the average daily temperature in January drops below 25°F (-4°C), building inspectors enforce IRC Section R905.2.7. This code requires Ice and Water Shield to be installed at the eaves.

The Rule: The membrane must start at the edge of the eave and extend upward until it reaches a point at least 24 inches inside the exterior wall line of the building. Because typical roof overhangs are 12 to 24 inches, contractors usually have to install two full 36-inch rows of Ice and Water Shield to satisfy this mathematical requirement.

Can you put Ice and Water shield over the whole roof?

Yes, but only if the roof geometry requires it (like a very low pitch) OR if you use a highly specialized, expensive “breathable” vapor-permeable membrane. Using standard smooth or granulated Ice and Water shield over the entire deck will cause massive attic condensation issues.

Does Ice and Water Shield replace metal flashing?

No. It acts as a secondary backup. In a valley or around a chimney, the Ice and Water Shield is adhered directly to the wood decking first, and then the rigid metal flashing is installed over the top of it. They work as a unified system.
